Word Games For All To Play

Here are a few word games that can while away the time on a long journey, a wet afternoon or while queueing at the bar!
These games don't need any equipment other than a reasonable memory and a sense of humour!
You've probably heard of these games already, but may know them under a different name. If so, why not let me know about the name you know them by and any rules that differ from mine. Use the "Email My Games" link on the Wet Weekend Page.

20 Questions
Everyone must know this game. It's simple! Just think of an object and the other players have 20 questions to use to discover what you're thinking of.
The first question should always be; "Is it Animal, Mineral or Vegetable?"
But REMEMBER after this initial question, you can only answer "Yes" or "No."
The player who correctly guesses your object takes the next turn.

20 Questions (Please be aware that this clip contains strong language)
Name That Town
This game will challenge your knowledge of the UK and your spelling. You may need a map of Britain to hand to resolve any arguements.
Choose a player to go first, that player names a Town, city, or Village in the UK.
The next player has to do the same, but their Town has to begin with the last letter of the previous Town. And so on.
You aren't allowed to repeat a name and you may want to ban the use of Halifax!

I Went To The Shops
This is a simple memory game. The players take it in turn to add items from the shop shelves.
with each turn the list of items you have to repeat before adding your choice becomes longer.
You must start your turn by saying, "I went to the shops and bought" then repeat the shopping list so far.
To make it more interesting, choose a type of shop from which your list will come, E.G. Supermarket, Hardware Store, Sex Shop.

Alphabet Soup
I'm not sure of the correct name for this game, but we just call it Alphabet Soup.
Choose who is going to take the first turn and then the person to the players left has to run through the letters of the alphabet in their head. Player 1 then Says "stop." and the person running through the alphabet states which letter they were stopped on, for example P.
Player 1 then has to list the following, all starting with the letter P.
A Boys Name
A Girls Name
A Country
A City
An animal
A Plant
You can add further categories as you like, such as a film, song, book etc.
Move round the group in turn with the player becoming the person running through the alphabet for the next player and so on.
The letter of the alphabet being used can be repeated, but the answers given can't.
Try having 3 lives each. You lose 1 each time you can't fill a category.

When I Went To The Moon
This game sounds much the same as "I went to the shops" but is quite different. See if you can work out the rules from the description below.
You may have as many players as you wish, but for this example we'll have just 3; Adam, Beth & Chris.
In turn, players add to a personal list of items they wish to take to the moon with them.
E.g. Adam takes an Apple
Beth may take a ball
Chris takes a calculator.
And the turn comes back to Adam again, who takes an Apple and an Antelope!
So turn by turn, each players individual list gets longer and they must repeat their own list in the correct order.
However, Chris may not take a Duck!
Beth certainly couldn't take a Sandwich!
Adam can't stow away an Elephant!
Have you worked out why?
If you're really stuck on what determines the items each player can take with them, email me on the "My Games" Link on the Wet Weekend Page and I'll tell you the answer.
