In August 1999 I was diagnosed as an insulin dependant Diabetic.
I suppose it wasn't too great a shock, given that my grandparents on both sides were Diabetic and I was over-weight and under-exercised!
Since then I have been juggling insulin and diet in an attempt to keep some sort of control of my blood sugars.
This page is an attempt to draw together some information, resources and advice for anyone who isn't just diabetic, but is Visually Impaired too.

After more than a decade of insulin injections, blood tests and frustration, I am now starting to feel the inevitable effects on my system.
I have difficulty walking due to the periferal neuropathy experienced in my feet and my balance is thrown out due to the combined effects of the nerve damage and my blindness.
I put these down to what I call "The Sugarcube Explosion!"
I'm not a brilliant Diabetic, my control varies from excellent to out-right awful!
To be honest, I have difficulty understanding how my blood sugars vary so much and despite changing eating patterns, changing the types and doses of insulin, I can't get Blood Sugar Levels down under 10 first thing in the morning; during the day they're fine, but mornings are nearly always in the low teens.
There are a number of suggestions out there on the Web that may be helpful to you; many differing diets, rachemes etc and I have tried to pull some of this information together here.
