My Favourite Links
On this page you'll find some of my favourite links.
Some are practical, some more obscure, but all the sites linked here are managable with Screen readers.
If you have a link you think I should know about send it to me at Netmaster
I can't guarantee to use it, but will take a look at it.
Please include a brief description of the site if the link isn't self-explanatory.
Favourites
- Whitestick
- Tom's famous Whitestick site remains a favourite with me.
It's simply the best web tool for visually impaired Internet beginners and was my homepage for years.
- Love Films
- LoveFilms is a must for DVD fans.
A large range of DVD's for you to buy or rent. Rentals through the post.
Try the Audio Described pages to see a list of those titles available with AD.
- HMV
- Personally I find HMV on-line shop the easiest to handle via a screen-reader.
A great range of products, easy search option, plenty of discounts.
Try using the "Wish List" feature, which allows you to store items you've found, but can't afford just yet.
- Cover Universe
- One of several sites where you can download covers & templates for CD's/DVD's to make your back-up copies look really great.
- The Cooks Kitchen supplies
- This is exactly what it says "on the tin!"
Everything you'll need for the kitchen for the amateur "baked beans on toast cook" to the Expert "Ritz Grill Chef."
- Lush!
- The Smelliest website around. Seriously lads, a bucket full of Lush at birthday or anniversery times, wins you a massive amount of brownie points.
Truth is, I like some of the stuff too! And Lush are a Poole company, hooray!
- Panasonic UK
- For parts,spares & sales.
I found searching through loads of retailers very frustrating so went straight to the manufacturer. If you aren't already aware, they make the world's best electric razors.
- Perfume Warehouse
- Huge range of Perfume, reasonable prices, gift wrap and delivered; can't be bad and remember those brownie points!
- Sizedwell Clothing
- Great clothing at sensible prices for the larger bloke.
I love this site, the clothes are priced similarly to High Street shops and are good quality. I've always had prompt service. Sizes for most items go up to 6XL.
- Go Baz com
- This site is great if you have a crude sense of humour, but still good even if you don't.
The pages are full of jokes, naughty items and cool stuff, from under a fiver to Am-ex required!
- Liverpool FC
- Liverpool Football Club, simply the best Football Team EVER!
This link takes you to the accessible version of the "official" club site and on-line shop.
- Every Hit Record
- This site is a library of hits, flops, and near misses. Look your favourite groups up to see histories etc.
- Pod Quiz
- Try this weekly Quiz to show just how little you do know!!
Thinking Of My Tummy
- O'Hagan's sausages
- You have to see the range of Bangers on sale on this site. It's probably not sensible to buy as an individual on this site, but if you gang up with friends & family, it may be workable.
There's an O'Hagans shop in Chichester where you can buy in smaller quantities, if you can get to Chichester that is.
- Manna Organic
- You can order using email from this webpage and I'd encourage anyone who can to do so. They have the most scrummy Cheesecakes and chocolate torte.
- Teddington cheese
- A playground for Mice! Mind you, you'll need to go careful, it's a playground for "Rich Mice!"
- Cyber Candy Store
- Forgive the Americanism in the link, but it's in the company's name.
The site will tempt you into buying sweets from all around the world. Just make sure your Dentist doesn't find out.
- Montezumas Chocolates
If you are, like me, Diabetic, you just won't want to click on this link; will you?
- Tesco Supermarket
- Ok, so it's not an exciting link, but I find that Tesco's access site is the only Supermarket on line that I can shop in entirely unassisted.
It's not the quickest site to use and you'll need to remember to turn off the item pictures or your screen-reader will choke, but it does the job required.
The link will take you to the main page, click on access options and set the site for your needs and thereafter, whenever you log in it will take you to the access version.
Techy Stuff
- Novatech
- This site can be a little tricky for we Blindies to start, but you'll learn your way around.
Novatech are my favourite techy shop. Really good prices, excellent kit, a brilliant own brand and excellent service/support.
- Blank Disc Shop
- Not just blank discs, but everything you could possibly need to create or copy discs of any type, plus a huge range of accessories and conponants. I buy all my media from this site.
- Scan Uk
- Worth comparing prices for all your PC and media needs here. A great range of kit including the best prices I've found for digital frames, mp3 sticks etc.
- Maplin Electronics
- Plenty to choose from here, though not for the dedicated PC builder. A good tip is to sign up for their regular sales email.
- Neato Media Labelling Products
- Neato has a great range of media labelling products, including A4 templates for all sizes of discs, cases etc. You can buy several versions of their Media Face software on this site.
Note, the mediaface software is a graphics program and unsuitable for screenreader users without assistance. However, set up your required projects with sighted help, save them and you can then print them time after time without sightling help.
- Dymo labelling
- This site has an on-line shop to allow you to buy PC compatible labellers, handheld versions and all the refill/spares you'll need.
Note; As far as I'm aware it does not have the Braille Dymo products available. You need to go to RNIB's Shop for these.
- Download Com
- Try this site out to search for and down load software. It's screen-reader friendly but can be tiresome reading through the pages. Look for the Freeware or shareware tag to get free software.
- Total Recorder
- This is an excellent sound recorder which will work well with your screen-reader software and doesn't conflict with Soundcard requirements. It's not a bad price either and with the exchange rate as it is at the moment, it's a bargain.
- Next Up
- A selection of recorded and synthetic voices for use with text voicing software such as Text Aloud
- Dolphin Uk
- At Dolphin You'll find trials, full versions and support for a range of Access software including:
Luna Screen-magnifier, Hal screen-reader, Supernova (SNV) combined Screen-reader/magnifier, Cicero text to voice output scanning software, Easy reader Daisy disc reader
and much more such as software to create Daisy titles of your own. It's one of those sites that you need to check periodically to keep up with developments in the Access Technology field. Again, sign up for their news mail.
- Free Schools
- If you fancy learning how to make a mess of a website,"like wot I did!" you'll find free tutorials on a number of webscripts at this link>
- Key Stroke X L
- Try a look at this clever site. It contains lists of key-strokes which are scripted into everyday software packages, allowing you to use the programmes from the keyboard.
- Windows "Start-Up" Editor
- This program allows you to edit the Start-Up registry to remove eronious entries.
Please don't use this program unless you are confident about it's use. It's an idea to set a "Windows Restore Point before you alter the Start-Up registry
- Outlook Express Back-Up Tool
- A useful routine that allows you to back-up all of your Outlook Express settings, folders and emails
For The Blindie In The Corner
- Blind software
- Blind Software have a modest range of software applications designed specifically for us Blindies!
Some are freeware and others come at a nominal Dollar cost. I can recommend "Day BY Day pro" and use it both at home and for work.
It's worth giving them a look.
- Visionade
- This is the site for the manufacturer of the Victor Daisy Readers. Again, their news email keeps you up to date with the latest developments.
- Audio Described TV Listing
- Click here to see all the TV programs with Audio Description available listed by channel, courtesy of Virgin Media
- Braille Jewellery
- I've not bought any Braille Jewellery folks, on the basis that only I could read a Braille Identity bracelet for instance and I know my name! But it might be your "kinda thang!"
- Calibre
- Audio Books for the "Print Disabled" on Cassette and MP3 CD
Note: These are Mp3 CD's not Daisy titles.
- RNIB Talking Books Catalogue
- This page allows you to search for titles in the R.N.I.B.'s catalogue of Digital Daisy titles and to add them to your selection lists, if you are a member.
- R.N.I.B.
- Royal National Institute Of The Blind, (RNIB) home page.
- A.F.B.P.
- Action For Blind People, (AFBP) Home Page.
Try the Holidays link on this page for their Hotel details.
- Diabetes Uk
- I've thrown this one in in case anyone else wants to join the Sugarblast Atomic Bomb!
This page content is likely to change so check back another time.
