Blindo's Inn closed on 5 October 2010. Blindo's Inn was the name of an Email List designed for those with a visual impairment but no lack of imagination, where the topics of discussion were not confined to either the world of the blind nor to reality itself! In our virtual pub Blindo's Inn, a run down Free House isolated on a misty moor, somewhere in the South West of England, we gathered to enjoy each others company, share experiences, opinions, news and the odd pint of course.
An Email List is a device for conversation via Email. The host company, in this case Google Groups, retains a record of email addresses for those subscribed to the list and duplicates each email sent and distributes it to every address on that list save for the original sender. Thus everyone subscribed to the group sees every email sent to Blindo's Inn. The subject line in Group Mails allows members to follow a specific topic, known as a "Thread," and either contribute too or ignore the subject under discussion.
Like many other blind and visually impaired PC users, I had stumbled upon Email Groups/lists almost by accident, but found that many such groups were Topic Orientated and quite restrictive. What I was searching for was a group where you could just chat, about anything, but with the underlying understanding that only comes from talking with those who have a similar shared experience. I created a list entitled Blindo's Cafe with the intension that members could drop in at any time, pull up a chair and grab a virtual coffee and join in the conversation. The atmosphere we tried to create was that of a French pavement cafe. Blindo's Cafe expanded to include virtual accommodation above the Cafe, a virtual Dog run for the members Guide Dogs, and so much more. We even had details of the Square in which the Cafe was located and descriptions of the beach it faced.
However, the host server company had severe problems handling the volume of mail sent by it's group clients and posting ground to a halt. In consultation with my fellow managers, we closed the Cafe and moved the list to an alternative provider, and in doing so, changed the virtual Cafe into a virtual Pub, Blindo's Inn.
The Inn is rather run down, very isolated and lacks many modern facilities; such as indoor toilets for instance.
We have a mixture of staff. Those who manage the Blindo's Inn list and our virtual staff who work in the Kitchens and Bar.

Having been unsuccessful in my search, I decided to create my own list.
It appeared that others liked the idea and have been joining in ever since, adding to the virtual world we inhabit with their own ideas and suggestions.
